Colorful, cozy, and sustainable

In Utgård, just outside Östersund, stands a majestic turn-of-the-century house. For decades, the house has stood peacefully in its place, surrounded by the Indalsälven River and rolling fields. But inside, as usual, there is no shortage of activity.

Living in the house are Petra Nyborg, her partner, their three children, and two cats. Six years ago, the family bought the house, located just a stone's throw from Lake Storsjön. Since then, they have been busy renovating to create their dream home. When they purchased it, the house was move-in ready, but their vision was to turn it into an ongoing project where their dream home would take shape, little by little.

“We moved in sometime around the turn of the year. The house had previously only been used as a vacation home, so when we finally turned on the heating, there was a bit of suspense. But it all worked out fine,” Petra says with a laugh.

Silver-toned heartwood pine with many benefits

When we visit Petra, Utgård is showing its best side, with radiant sunshine, lush meadows, and birdsong filling the air. Smiling, Petra leads us out onto the spacious deck, built with SCA’s heartwood pine decking.

“This is one of my favorite spots in the house, especially this time of year. The decking turned out so beautiful—soft underfoot, and the silver-toned sheen that heartwood pine develops over time blends perfectly with the surroundings and our other wooden furniture,” says Petra.

Petra, who has a true passion for home renovation, loves building with wood and appreciates how it adds warmth to both the house and its interior.

“The great thing about wood is that it’s so forgiving and doesn’t have many limitations. As a non-professional, you can do a lot yourself because the material is so easy to work with. If you have a saw, some sandpaper, and a few nails, you can get pretty far,” Petra says.
